Jewelry Care

Solid gold is made to be worn. With a little care, your Eau Rouge piece can stay beautiful for years. Gold is a precious but not indestructible metal: like all fine jewelry, it can scratch, dent or wear with time, and gemstones and pearls need their own care.

Everyday wear

  • Put your jewelry on last, after lotion, perfume, hairspray and makeup, and take it off before you shower, swim or exercise.
  • Remove it before using household cleaners, bleach or chlorinated water. Chlorine and harsh chemicals can damage gold alloys and weaken settings.
  • Take it off for heavy lifting, gardening, cleaning and sports where you can, since pressure and knocks can bend chains, loosen settings and scratch surfaces.
  • Gold is a relatively soft metal, so everyday wear will gradually leave fine scratches. A jeweler can polish a piece to refresh its finish.

Cleaning

  1. Mix a few drops of mild dish soap into a bowl of lukewarm water.
  2. Soak the piece for a few minutes.
  3. Gently brush with a soft baby toothbrush, paying attention to the back of settings and between links.
  4. Rinse in clean lukewarm water, and make sure the drain is closed.
  5. Pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.

Avoid abrasive cleaners, toothpaste and rough cloths, which can scratch. Please be careful with ultrasonic and steam cleaners, since they can loosen stones or damage some gemstones and pearls. If your piece has gemstones or pearls, we recommend soap-and-water cleaning only.

Storage

  • Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or in a lined jewelry box compartment, so pieces do not rub against each other.
  • Fasten necklace and bracelet clasps before storing to help prevent tangles.
  • Keep jewelry in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, humidity and chemicals.

Avoiding scratches and damage

  • Avoid wearing pieces in a way that lets them rub against one another.
  • Be mindful of hard surfaces, keys and bags.
  • Fine chains and delicate designs can kink or bend under force, so handle them gently when putting them on and taking them off.
  • If a chain kinks, do not pull it tight. Ease it out gently or ask a jeweler for help.

Gemstone and pearl care

  • Gemstones differ in hardness and sensitivity. Protect stones from hard knocks, sudden temperature changes and chemicals.
  • Clean stones with soap, water and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaning unless a jeweler confirms it is safe for that stone.
  • Pearls are soft and sensitive. Wipe them with a soft, damp cloth after wearing, keep them away from perfume, hairspray and chemicals, and store them apart from harder pieces.

Professional inspection

For pieces you wear often, particularly rings and pieces with stones, we suggest having a jeweler check the settings, prongs and clasps from time to time. A jeweler can also clean, polish and refresh your jewelry safely.
